The galaxies in the field of the nearby GRB 980425 / SN 1998 bw

چکیده
We present spectroscopic observations of ESO 184−G82, the host galaxy of GRB 980425/SN 1998bw, and six galaxies in its field. A host redshift of z = 0.0087± 0.0006 is derived, consistent with that measured by Tinney et al. (1998). Redshifts are obtained for the six surrounding galaxies observed. Three of these galaxies lie within 11 Mpc of each other, confirming the suggestion that some of these galaxies form a group. However, all of the field galaxies observed lie at significantly greater distances than ESO 184−G82 and are therefore not associated with it. The host galaxy of GRB 980425/SN 1998bw thus appears to be an isolated dwarf galaxy and interactions with other galaxies do not seem to be responsible for its star formation.

SN 1998bw is an unusual Type Ic supernova that may be associated with the γ-ray burst GRB 980425. We use a synchrotron self-absorption model for its radio emission to deduce that the synchrotron-emitting gas is expanding into a circumstellar medium of approximately r−2 density profile, at a speed comparable to the speed of light. We assume that the efficiencies of production of relativistic ele...
متن کاملConstraints on Association of Single-pulse Gamma-ray Bursts and Supernovae
We explore the hypothesis, similar to one recently suggested by Bloom and colleagues, that some nearby supernovae are associated with smooth, single-pulse gamma-ray bursts, possibly having no emission above ~ 300 keV. We examine BATSE bursts with durations longer than 2 s, fitting those which can be visually characterized as single-pulse events with a lognormal pulse model. The fraction of even...

We present and discuss optical diagnostics of the low redshift (z < 0.2) galaxies that are known to have hosted supernovae associated with γ-ray bursts (GRBs). The three galaxies are all actively starforming sub-luminous (L < L ⋆) galaxies with relatively low metallic-ities (Z ∼ < Z ⊙). We find no evidence for substantial internal extinction within any of the galaxies. We derive star formation ...

The recent discovery of the unusual supernova SN1998bw and its apparent correlation with the gamma-ray burst GRB 980425 has raised new issues concerning both the GRB and SNe. SN1998bw was unusually bright at maximum light and expansion velocities were large making SN1998bw a possible candidate for a “hypernova” with explosion energies exceeding 10erg. We show that the light curve of SN1998bw ca...

We report 139 photometric observations through the B, V, and I filters of the supernova SN 1998bw, an object which is associated with the Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 980425. Detailed light curves of this unique supernova can be compared to theoretical models, so we report here our light curve for 123 days between 27 June 1998 and 28 October 1998. The light curve of SN 1988bw is consistent with those of...
